Conference season insights

Three shifts reshaping competitive advantage in biopharma

Conference season is often measured by the science on display. And across ASCO, BIO and other industry events this summer, there was plenty to get excited about.

What especially caught our attention was how the competitive landscape around that science is changing. New diagnostics, earlier intervention and increasingly personalized treatment pathways are expanding where companies can make an impact across the patient journey.

The result is more opportunity, but also far more competition for attention. Scientific progress alone is no longer enough to create competitive advantage. Companies also have to make the opportunity, and its significance, clear to the people who determine its success. That puts brand in the conversation much earlier.

Here are three competitive realities we believe will define the next era of the industry.

1. Better science no longer guarantees differentiation

Every stakeholder is being asked to process an unprecedented volume of information, making attention one of the industry’s scarcest resources.

The companies that stand apart won’t be the ones talking the most about what they’ve discovered. They’ll be the ones making it easiest for others to understand why it matters. That understanding starts with a clear brand foundation, one that translates complex science into a distinct idea stakeholders can recognize and believe in.

2. Development decisions are becoming brand decisions

Early-stage funding remains selective, making every investor meeting, partnership discussion and clinical milestone more consequential. By the time commercialization begins, the market may have already spent years forming an opinion.

The companies creating momentum aren’t waiting to build credibility. Brand decisions made during development shape how the market understands and ultimately adopts an innovation. Companies that align development and brand strategy early are better positioned to earn investor confidence, attract partners and prepare the market well before commercialization.

3. AI is changing brand building, not replacing the humans behind it

AI can accelerate research, strategic exploration, naming and creative development. But more output doesn’t necessarily create stronger brands. The work still requires people to interpret the science, understand what audiences need and push ideas beyond the expected.

The winners won’t simply use AI to move faster. They’ll use it to automate routine work so their teams can spend more time on the strategic thinking, judgment and creativity that make a brand distinct. The advantage still comes from what people do with the technology, not the technology itself.

Looking ahead

The companies that lead over the next decade won’t simply develop better science. They’ll build understanding around that science earlier and more consistently.

That’s why we believe brand is fundamentally changing. It’s no longer a downstream expression of innovation. It’s becoming a business discipline that helps innovation earn attention, build trust and drive adoption from development through commercialization.
